Hi, I can only remember reading the Stephen Kinight book a long time ago. Would somebody be good enough to recomend a reading list of say 10 books which would give me the best ripperologist grounding.

1) good general and up to date overview of the case
Jack the Ripper - Scotland Yard Investigates Evans/Rumbelow
2) classic book on the case - still widely loved by Ripperologists - the Complete History of Jack the Ripper Philip Sugden
3) good pictorial history plus up to date overview of case - The london of Jack the Ripper Then and Now by Hutchinson and Clack
4) case facts - The Ultimate Jack the Ripper Sourcebook - Evans/Skinner
and 5) good book about ripper letters JtR Letters From Hell Evans/Skinner
6) -even if I do say so - overview of lives of victims -The Victims of JtR by Neal Shelden
7) newspaper coverage - there are several good ones - but try The News from Whitechapel Digrazia/Chisholm/Youst
8) for a more social history overview try Paul Begg's Definitive History
9) for a book about the case from a police pov try the man who hunted JtR by Connell/Evans
10) about ripperology - Ripperology by Robin Odell

rare but good so not in the ten - John malcom's the whitechapel murders of 1888 - this is one of my favourite jtr books - although it is more about jtr through the authors eyes.
and Robert Mclaughlins - the first jack the ripper victims photgraphs - which is rare now but both brilliant and fasinating

Reading Paul Begg's Definitive History

Whoa man, I am getting bogged down in the first few pages--really boring history of London going back to Roman times. Is it all like this?

No - and it's not "really boring" either. As to the history of London going back to Roman times - is that not interesting in itself? If not, then perhaps you should look elsewhere... but please don't expect to make much sense of the case until you've gained a significant grasp of the historical context. And I don't just mean the historical context of late 19th Century London either.

^ Rob's and mine's book has been back on the shelves for a couple of months now. It's nonsense from Smiths that it's being reprinted. I suggest you get it from Amazon, who definitely stock it, and who sell it for less!
