Hi Don,

Agreed. One's own work is always the most difficult to proofread. I proofread our collective efforts for Ripper Diary, then Sutton proofread the result and sent it to me to proofread their proofreading, and I walked up to the post office to send it all off to them for a final proofread - and still my bloody brother (who is a patents attorney - and a bloody nice bloke actually) found a few slips of the pen in the final version.

Unfortunately, if one chooses to write publicly for pleasure, profit or punishment, one is going to be judged on one's writing skills and one has to jolly well get on with it. So whenever I make a mistake I jolly well deserve to be spanked just like anyone else - but no harder, please.

Thanks for posting that extract [from T. P. O'Connor's memoirs]. Not unknown, evidently, though I hadn't seen it before (not that that means much).

Hi all-
Just watched it (The BBC5 thingy!)....and have made a copy that I've offered to Howie- Well it was interesting in some ways -but there were some serious Aaaaaagh moments!!!!....Not going into them now but shall we say- the programme made some interesting viewing !!

With cameos from Don and Stewart which were great!!

- Am interested to know where they got that Monotype machine....the Zoetropes were great too... and we all know where the Andrew Cook interview was filmed!

Hubby watched it with me (as a journo of MANY YEARS!!) and said they had a few points

The woman on the slab as a 'er victim made me smile- 5 yrs at RADA then to lie on a slab and try not to giggle when you have felt tips doing the lines of the wounds!!!!!

The NEW newspaper headline was decidedly WEAK and I think the guy on the pc looked amused and bored to be honest!

Not going to go into inaccuracies but it was sort of worth a watch!,,,Interesting points,,,,but am NOT totally convinced!!!

sneaking in to put this post up...you 'aven't seen me, roight!

Positives: seeing Don and Stewart and their contributions.

Negatives: too much hype as usual over very little decent content. Ironic to have a programme criticising tabloid sensationalism, in a programme which was the visual equivalent of tabloid sensationalism. The summing up of: a mystery of 120 years has now been solved! Yes, of course it has...pack up everyone...

Did anyone else watch the document examiner and her acetate matches and think...oh no, there are those same t's that Toppy/Hutch did/didn't use!!!! Back once again to the commonalities of literacy at the time.

At least we hung in there for the 9.o' clock rant 'eh!!


We recorded it and am glad I did- not for the SCREAMING wrong bits but for the great shots of the Monopress and a great Zoetrope! Found myself having a complete tanty about THE WRONGS in it!!

Best???- well he was obviously a dodgy character (graphologist joke there!) but the Ripper- I doubt it!

The morgue shots are still tickling me though- not as much as Miss RADA though 'eh!!!


Good to see Ripper stuff on the tele though- no matter how crap!!

Have to say I was very disappointed with the whole program. Kevin McKenzie did a "I've read a paragraph on Jack the Ripper somewhere, so I know everything there is to know about him" impression. And I wasn't convinced the Best/Dear Boss handwriting matched. I buggered up my recording of the program, but from what I remember on the Best handwriting there was a capital 'R' which looked nothing like the 'R' in Ripper.
Have to try and catch a re-run to check.
I watched the Rory McGrath 'Bloody Britain' episode on Jack the Ripper earlier today for the first time and I thought that was twice as good and it was only on for half the time.

yes this is a very good point, hard writing in 1888, was taught in a very different way....one of the comments made about the marginalia.

I wasnt convinced by some of Quigley's comments but to be fair I'd like to see more. Have we actually identified Best? I was unclear what evidence was being presented about him...where did the new photo come from?
