Truly impressive Richard, you've done what words cannot do.

    Oooo! ta

To be honest I wanted it to be better than it actually is at the moment. I am going to keep working in the room (actually feels like a real room to me now!) to try to make it more realistic. It is possible to create photo realistic scenes but of course the better the graphics the bigger the file sizes and longer load times etc. This room is already 20Mbs for the standalone file. I could probably get away with another 20Mbs of detail before it becomes too cumbersome.
Of course on spanking new PCs with fast processors and top notch graphics cards it's possible to have hundreds of Mbs of data and still whizz along. In the right hands it would be possible to create something that is actually indistinguishable from the real thing (if we knew what the real thing looked like!).

thank you again for the kind comments.

For those having problems viewing this via a browser I have added these stand-alone versions that can be downloaded to your PC / Mac to view:

      MAC Zip File

      PC Zip File

Just upload them to your PC and unzip. If you can't unzip or don't know how then I can supply an unzipped file but it will be a bit big at 40Mbs.

Also, I have tested the PC version on my PC but I have never had a Mac so I don't know the file structures for a Mac. In a PC version there is an 'exe' file which launches the files. I can't see an exe file in the Mac one but I am assuming the Mac files structure is different from PC and Mac users will know how to launch the thing. If not, let me know.

Sorry for that rather long boring paragraph there!

Quick update. Regarding the low light levels. I want to maintain the same level of light that provides an approximation of the light given out from a low fire and a single candle. But I agree the room is a bit dark to see what's what. So as a compromise I have given you a bulls-eye lantern to provide an additional bit of illumination. As you walk around the room now your lantern will brighten the way ahead.

          Images

          Hello Richard,

Breathtaking images, thank you! As I see it from the illustrations the banking up of the fire must have been to illuminate the room. Conan Doyle mentions a fire being used as a source of light in at least one of his stories.
Also as I understand it the window had been broken fairly recently. If the key had been lost for any length of time, there would have been no broken pane to reach through. If it was a stretch for Barnett, it would have been almost impossible for someone smaller. I stick to my belief that the window was left unlocked, so that it could be pushed up and the door opened through the window in this way. Mary had few possessions to lose, after all.

Best wishes, and keep up the good work!

This is a horrible thought, but Richard's re-creation suggests to me how the body was positioned so as to be 'best' (from the killer's mind-set) viewed from the position of a man standing with his back to the fire.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

              Very impressive!

The bed does seem a tad narrow, yes.
Will it be possible to go outside?

The only thing that doesn't seem right (apart from the bed size), is the wall behind the headboard. The photo seems to suggest that the wall goes further along to the right after the inset door.

I'll knock up a redesign of the bed and floor plan and post it here for you to look at. I agree about the wall but would that suggest the bed was much further away from the passage wall - we're talking maybe 3/4 feet away from the passage wall now.

Absolutely superb job, Richard, in every way. This is the first time I've been able to truly visualize how small the room really was - and to experience actually being there - That's the best part! And I think you should get an A+ for accuracy; only a perfectionist could have taken the pains to accomplish what you have. There are two things which puzzle me, however: First, I seem to recall seeing some kind of wallpaper covering the unused doorway in the partition, and secondly I always thought the head of the bed was a little closer to the outer wall. I'm just going by memory of the police photos, and photos can be deceiving anyway. By the way, for what it's worth, I don't think it makes any difference whether the foot of the bed was pulled away from the wall by Mary Jane (say to facilitate a second person getting out without climbing over another or to get closer to the fire), or whether police pulled it out to facilitate taking the photograph. Could have been either way - makes no difference. Thanks for your efforts, Richard.

                      Position of bed

                      Hello again,

Weren't there blood splashes on the partition and a pool of blood on the floor underneath? Also seem to remember the doctor saying that the body had ben moved from one side of the bed to the other for better access. This suggests that the bed was originally pushed up against the partition.

                      Best wishes,
                      C4

Excellent stuff. The enhanced lighting makes everything so much clearer.

The image lifted from dissertations shows that the area in question is about 2ft, with the headboard roughly in line with the inset of the partition door.
So your bed can stay where it is, but the partion needs sliding over to the left.

I think I can create a stand alone version which can be downloaded and opened on your PC.

Can see if now Richard thanks. Very very impressive, as someone has already pointed out it really brings home how small the room was. Excellent work, much appreciated.
