  • Decent Ripper DVD's

Hi, I'm new to the subject of JTR & the Whitechapel murders and have only recently started to read up on it. Can anyone recommend good factual (not feature films) DVD's about the subject. Which would you reccommend to someone in my position? Where can I purchase them? I've checked the DVD's on the media section of the Casebook but there not really what I'm after and Amazon had so many I couldn't suss out which to get!
Any advice would be really appreciated.

    Thanks.

You're right, technohead, there are lots of DVDs from which to choose. One of the best can be purchased by following the "Jack the Ripper Tour" link on the Casebook's main page. The DVD there is called Unmasking Jack the Ripper and it's very good.

I'm not sure why you don't care for the DVDs listed in the Media section. Two that I rather like are Jack the Ripper: Phantom of Death, part of the Biography series and available on the A&E website, and The Hunt for Jack the Ripper, available through The History Channel.

Answered your question on the other thread you started on the same subject.

Did not Patricia Cromwell do a documentary that is available . . .

A listener to the podcast (who refers to the episode 'Watching the Detectives' as "excellent" btw, thx Philip & Mike) pointed me to this item for sell on ebay. Barlow & Watt's series.

Called for some reason "Watt & Barlow: Jack the Ripper investigated. Circa 1973" But claiming to be from 'original master tapes'.

Doubtful since the seller mentions time stamps on some episodes and that it's in NTSC format.

My guess is that this package is just like my files, ie 6 Divx, which the seller has converted to NTSC DVD.

Just to illustrate the point Philip made about these multiple gen copies on the show.

            Can I do no wrong?

Actually, no one answer that because I know the answer already.

              Hello Technohead

As your soliciting opinion I'd just like to add that you could do a lot worse than checking out Jonathons 'podcast' site in general. And the program on TV documentaries is an excellent start.

I still hold by the old 'Barlow and Watts' until someone gets around to doing a modern six part series its still the best....but that might be my nostalgia for the first program I saw giving some bias..

You could do worse than check out Richard Jones DVD. It was self-financed, not big budget, but it covers the basics well.

'Unmasking Jack the Ripper' is very good if you filter out the Kosminski stuff. Lol
                Best regards,

                  Hi Philip,

I was watching a recent episode of "Ghost Hunters" last night. They were over in London investigating a case and took the time to take a guided Ripper tour. You were not that guide by any chance were you?

Nah - I think I'd remember a bunch of charlatans who needed to be strung up by their gonads!

Thanks for the response, Philip but don't hold back -- how do you really feel about them?

By the way, the guide said that the "most likely" suspect was Kosminski.
