  • Footage of the East End of London in the 1900s

    Happy Easter!

I do enjoy trying various searches in youtube. Never seen this one before.

It gives you a feel for the type of environment that the Ripper operated.

It's black and white and no sound, of course.

Another one I came across. Made me think, I don't think I've ever come across moving film of Victoria.

Also black and white and no sound.

Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Last visit to Ireland. The only "Victorian" film.(1900).

    These are not clues, Fred.
It is not yarn leading us to the dark heart of this place.
They are half-glimpsed imaginings, tangle of shadows.
And you and I floundering at them in the ever vainer hope that we might corral them into meaning when we will not.
    We will not.

Thank you for sharing that with us. It is amazing to watch something filmed so long ago.

I think that sometimes it is easy to think of the various folk involved in the JTR case as characters rather than real people.

When I watch old footage like this, I am always struck with how normal people are. Yes, the clothes are not like we wear now, and they may be taking part in activities that no longer happen... but they are men, women and children, just like the ones I know now.

      Real people.
