It was a good movie up until the last ten or so minutes. My question is: Does this movie help explain the Jack the Ripper murders well to those that don't really know about them, or does this movie, like the movie version of Beowulf, not do the real story justice and just confuses people even more? What do y'all think?

Hi Oxxie!

Considering - amongs other things - the fact that Eddowes was still alive and kicking when the Lusk kidney surfaced in "From Hell", I tend to lean very markedly towards your second suggestion; that the movie confuses those who do not have a grip of what really happened. Some nice settings and some good acting, absolutely, but the story...!

It has great "Hammer Films" look and atmosphere, but the claims of killer(s) identity are, surprise surprise, such heap of dung from Moore´s comic books it is based on that...

i'd advise against getting one's history from a Hollywood movie in the same way that i would advise against getting one's history from historical fiction such as Phillippa Gregory's tat.

Best place to get history from would be the original sources, or failing that well-researched secondary sources.

Once commercialism in the form of making money by interesting the masses is involved, history gets distorted, so films and novels are a big no-no for taking at face value when they deal with historical facts.

From Hell certainly looked good and the directors made great claims about the authenticity (particularly of the injuries on the victims dummies)

But I have to say I much preferred Murder By Decree,
as a Sherlock Holmes movie it cannot claim any authenticity,
but neither can From Hell !

I'm with you Murder By Decree is a better film and less stupid than From Hell. Which is totally inaccurate.
