Or perhaps he changed his mind at some point.

I've always suspected that Abberline was possibly being sarcastic when he said "You've caught Jack the Ripper at last!" in reference to Chapman. (Or whatever the EXACT quote was.)

Do we have any sort of idea as to just how MANY people that the Police (BOTH City & Met) interviewed in the 18 months or whatever that the case was active?

As for being questioned by the Police, I believe so...if I recall Peter Sutcliffe was questioned by the Police at some stage in their enquiries.

I personally like somebody similar to Isenschmid - fits physical description, skilled with a knife, rudimentary anatomical knowledge. Ripperologist had a piece about the City police watching butchers row a few years back. Yes JI was incarcerated, but a similar character would be interesting if the City information became available.

Thanks for the comments Jim/ Ms D

I did suspect that the majority would suspect that the killer had actually existed in some form on the investigation and so far that’s the case.

Does anyone think it possible, or even likely, that the ripper was someone already mentioned in the case (apart from Cross who gets enough attention elsewhere)? By that I mean as a witness or a Doctor or a Policeman or a mortuary attendant or even someone that just gets a mention.
    Hi Herlock,

My bet would be that his name was on file somewhere at the time of the murders.

I'd guess he was likely interviewed by the police or named to them by suspicious colleagues, neighbours or friends.

Unfortunately I suspect his name has been lost to the mists of time, but of course there's a chance that he's someone who we know of in connection to the case.

I'd personally bet against that though.

imho i think theres a good chance his name is out there/ been mentioned.
but no ... no one obvious. there would need to be new evidence to elevate any of these or anyone for that matter.

I'm happy to do you a letter, if you like? Just let me know who you want to be implicated.

Probably 1000s of folk... we just do not know their names. The Police reports would be amazing to have. Have they all really gone missing or been destroyed, seems unlikely. I'd love a read of Mizen's notebook for starters.

I’m always wondering if anyone in the case has left an error that we’ve have all missed but the odds have to be against it considering how deeply the case has been researched. I suppose that we’re all waiting for that “Hold on, how could X have been….etc” moment.

Interesting, most days I sway to the side of a person that 'we' do not know of but the Police probably did. Then the conspiracy nut in me kicks in and believes the Police had their man after Kelly but again for one reason or another we are not 'allowed' to know.

    Hmmmmm,

I'm not suspect oriented, as you know, so perhaps my view is not so important. But, there's always a but, it is not uncommon for the offender to be in the police files. I don't, however, think any of the named suspects are particularly likely JtR's. I do, however, think the police spoke with him during their house-to-house search, but didn't recognize him as JtR. So, perhaps, his name might have been recorded as someone they spoke to, but even if so, that information is lost to us now.
