Of all the witnesses that gave statements concerning their recollections of what they remembered about the night of Liz Strides death, Edward Spooner is the one witness on the scene that is not connected to the club, nor to local police, nor to that street specifically. His statement would have no need for bias or influence, a straight forward account of his activities as he recalled them.
On Oct 3rd The London Times reported, (one paper whose reputation seems to elude most of the mudslinging that most of the contemporary press reporting of that period gets), Spooners statement at the Inquest is printed. It is as follows;
"Between half-past 12 and 1 o'clock on Sunday morning I was standing outside the Bee Hive publichouse, at the corner of Christian-street and Fairclough-street, along with a young woman. I had previously been in another beershop at the top of the street, and afterwards walked down. After talking for about 25 minutes I saw two Jews come running along and shouting out "Murder" and "Police." They then ran as far as Grove-street and turned back. I stopped them and asked what was the matter. They replied, "A woman has been murdered." I then went round with them to Berner-street, and into Dutfield's yard, adjoining No. 40, Berner-street. I saw a woman lying just inside the gate. At that time there were about 15 people in the yard, and they were all standing round the body. The majority of them appeared to be Jews."
He adds shortly thereafter..."I noticed that blood was running down the gutter. I stood there about five minutes before a constable came. It was the last witness who first arrived...(referring to PC Lamb, who testified just before him)." Then his rationale for his timing..."The only means I had of fixing the time was by the closing of the publichouses. I stood at the top of the street for about five minutes, and then 25 minutes outside the publichouse. I should say it was about 25 minutes to 1 when I first went to the yard."
There are several interesting comments in his remarks that I believe many students might not take seriously, since Mr Spooner is dismissed as simply being incorrect on his timing by most of the popular opinion of this murder. But they are interesting to me, and in some cases his timing is substantiated by other witnesses, who did not have to estimate their times to the same extent Mr Spooner did. They had clocks and watches to refer to shortly before their estimates, of course its likely that not all displayed the same time though.
But some elements of his story should instill caution, as to which witness timings seem to align better with others. And what makes reasonable sense.
1. His estimated time of being in the entranceway is approx 25 to1. Issac Kozebrodski and Heschberg, 2 members from inside the club, also estimated they were alerted to the body before 12:45.
2. He stated that when he arrived, "the majority" of the people already there appeared to be Jewish. News had evidently spread beyond only club attendees it would seem before he arrived.
3. He states that he was there about 5 minutes before Lamb arrived, who claimed that he saw the men running for help at "about 1 o'clock, as near as I can tell".
4. Spooner saw the 2 Jews rush past going on to Grove Street and then joined them upon their return to the club. So the men were sent out a few minutes before he estimates he saw them.
5. He saw a trail of blood when he arrived, indicating that the victim was cut minutes before his arrival.
6. Using Issac Kozebroskis statement to the press within that first hour, and knowing that it was Eagle and Issac who met up with Lamb and joined him, Issac and Morris had to have left for help a few minutes prior to there meeting up with Lamb. Since Spooner says that he saw the other search party, the 2 Jews heading to Grove Street, at approx 12:35-40, it seems likely all 3 search parties left within a few minutes of each other. I say 3 search parties, because Issac K stated he was sent out by "Louis or some other member", and Eagle went the opposite way, and the 2 Jews went towards Grove St.
Now, there is a small snippet by Lamb that many also dont factor into their own investigation..."I was able to close the gates without disturbing the body. I put a constable at the gate and told him not to let any one in or out. I then entered the club and, starting from the front door, examined the place. I turned my light on and had a look at the different persons there, and examined a number of their hands and also their clothing to see if I could detect any marks of blood. I did not take up each one's hand. I should say there were from 15 to 20 persons in the club-room on the ground floor. I then went into every room, including the one in which there was a stage, and I went behind it. A person was there who informed me he was the steward." Now, he said this about the yard when he arrived..."How many people were there in the yard? Witness. - I should think 20 or 30. Some of that number had followed me in."
So 20 -30 people in the yard, and he estimates another 15-20 on the ground floor when he enters the club. At just after 1am? Thats a lot more people than we are led to believe were there at that time, and it is on the ground floor of the club, inside, that he meets Louis. So Louis is now inside when everyone else is outside?
Spooners statement does not contradict anything that Lamb said, they do in fact align in many ways. Its timing is also is supported by Issac K and Heschberg. And based on all their stories it would seem that the body of Elizabeth Stride was known about well before 1am.
Now it gets interesting. Eagle and Lave are there at around 12:40, and they see no-one, not even each other. So where are the 15 men that Spooner sees by the body within minutes of that time? Israel says he saw the deceased, and an assailant, and a witness, on the street outside the gates around 12:45. Do any of these stories validate any other stories, or are they validated by any?. If Eagle didnt see Lave then was Lave there? If Lave didnt see Eagle, did he actually arrive when, and enter the passageway, as he said he did? How many people were still in attendance at the time of the murder, and were they all upstairs...or were some in the yard already, and more on the ground floor...like Lamb sees?
There are many ways to assess the veracity of a statement by a witness. Would they have any reasons to tailor their recollections based on any personal risk to themselves in what they might reveal. Any potential loss or gain at stake? Any potentially incriminating evidence to concern them? Would they fear any suspicions about their likely involvement in this murder? Are they secondary source validated?
The reality is that ONLY the club staff, people making money from that club, would have some of those concerns that night, and oddly enough, those are the ONLY accounts that are contradictory to the majority of times and witnessed activities provided. The ONLY men who could be harmed by suspicions of guilt are the ONLY ones that have zero secondary verification, and they provided times that contradicted other witness times by as much as 25 minutes.
If you believe that this can all be explained by self adjusting the given times so what seems to fit better for your own preconceptions is left, then you arent interested in investigation, you are interested in validating your own beliefs.
