Hello all, the story is a modern fabrication. The writer even uses verbiage found in Swanson's summary, giving away the game that this is not a legitimate story from 1888. People like to have their fun.

Nathan Shine's story was well discussed several years ago and the outcome was a majority thought the tale was just so much "moon-shine." As might be expected, AP Wolf was rather vigorous in his defense of Nathan and as I recall AP and Dan Norder had some heated exchanges on the topic.

A couple of interesting things is the idea that he was coming from a worker's club, and according to his family tree, he was a cat's meat seller as was his mother. The name 'Shine' is, seemingly a Jewish one which might make a Berner Street connection possible, though all is conjecture at this point, and as he never made a police statement, will undoubtedly always be.
