Were they related?
Not according to Chris Scott's research they weren't GUT. His article on the identification of Sarah Lewis appeared in Ripperologist 133.
Here's a link to that issue:

I'm probably in a minority of one here, Debs, but I don't find Chris's Sarah Lewis identification particularly persuasive. Familial oral traditions are never the best sources of evidence in my view, and neither does the photograph of Chris's Sarah exhibit the 'negress' features attributed to the Sarah Lewis upon her attendance of the Kelly inquest.

I know exactly what you mean, Gary. I can't say that I am totally convinced but felt that people should get the opportunity to read it and decide for themselves.
I believe that the witnesses on the marriage were probably Joseph's sister and brother-in-law - there's a possible marriage Q3 1898 Whitechapel for Edward Wilson/Sarah Gothimmer.
There is a Sarah Jane Gotheimer with a Catherine Gotheimer in Lisbon Street 1930 -2. Looks like mother and daughter.
Maurice Lewis is a bit of an oddity isn't he? I've never been able to find any Maurice Lewis in Spitalfields, but there are at least three tailors in the general area named 'Morris Lewis,' but all 3 are middle-aged Russian/Polish emigrants and family men.
Why would a man of that sort be pitching pennies (and evidently drinking) on a Friday morning? And he claimed he had known Kelly for 5 years.
Maybe Maurice Lewis was actually Maurice Ellis. 1881 Census:
Maurice Ellis
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859
Relationship to Head: Son
Father: Lepman Ellis
Mother: Thresa Ellis
Where born:Aldgate, Middlesex, England
Street address: 13 Hutchinsons Avenue
Occupation: Tailor
Aged 29 in 1888; perhaps a little more likely to be drinking and tossing coins. There are very few men named Maurice living in London in 1881, so unless they got the name wrong, this guy is pretty much your only choice, and the occupation is correct. Don't be excited by his street address.
Hi Simon. Yeah, that's one of my three tailors; but he's 47 in 1888 with several mouths to feed, so why is he playing pitch and toss in McCarthy's Rents on a Friday morning before heading off to the boozer for a late liquid breakfast? Doesn't strike me as very likely to be our chap.
The other two can be found in 1881. One in Boar's Head Yard, Whitechapel; the other in Tenters Court, Spitalfields. Same story. Middle-aged family men.
Must have been a slow day in the East End. The volume on my stench-o-meter isn't cranked as high as yours, but even I can smell something fishy about that one. I humbly suggest that 'Maurice Lewis' has been misidentified.
Found this chap in the Liverpool Mercury that may be Morris Lewis?
The timescale worries me. In two years, he goes from a slum dweller playing pitch and toss to become the secretary of a Trade Union? Not impossible, but it doesn't quite work for me.
