I might be wrong but didn't middle class Victorian's sometimes retain old newspapers, or newsroom clippings, perhaps in a small library? After all, there was obviously no internet, so if you subsequently wanted to research information from the past that was probably the best way to do it.

Possible but one of the clipping was over a year old. Have you ever seen a newspaper hoarders apartment? A years worth of papers takes up quite a lot of space. Considering the blood on the papers was "animal blood" (could've been human) it's possible the papers were used for packaging at a butchers. Also john cleary or john arnold was a newspaper seller right?
