  • Welsh mining disasters with Davies

Here is a list of Welsh mining disasters that fit into the Kelly time frame. 1878-84. Whatever the truth of Kelly's story, she certainly fits it in to historical events, which makes me think she certainly lived in Wales and was familiar with them, she may have known someone who had a relative who had been in an accident or heard stories about the disasters or even knew a boy who was killed. She may have said she was married to sound more respectable.

Brynmally, Wrexham ,explosion of gas 30th May 1878, among the dead, Ishmail Davies 28 and John Davies 20.

Dinas, Rhondda 13th Jan 1879 63 dead including Edward Davies age 20.

Risca Collery New Mine Waunfawr 16th July 1880,120 dead including James Davies age 18 assistant mason, John Davies 18,haulier, William Davies 34 Stower.

Navel Collery Penygraig Rhondda, Glamorgan 10th dec 1880 101 dead
8 Davies dead. three middle aged and married with kids, plus two Johns, two Williams and one Evan.

Navel Collery Penygraig 27th Jan 1884 14 dead including Thomas Davies nicnamed' doublepower' contractor.

Since Davies is one of the most common surnames in Wales, it would be very surprising if at least one Davies didn't die in any given mining disaster.

And Kelly is the most common Irish name, Penhalion. We can only go on knowns not unknowns. Her story about her background was probably true with a bit of lying about details.
She may have changed her name, when she came to London, but still sticking to her background. If she changed her name to the most common Irish name, then it will be impossible to find her.
The bottom line is the knowns are all we have to investigate and even though many researchers has trawled the records tirelessly and come up with nothing, there is probably info staring us in the face that has to be connected with something less obvious that will one day be found.
