  • Dr's opening statement at inquest

    Hi all,

I'm going from memory here, so apologies in advance for any errors!

I've just finished The Secret of Prisoner 1167. Tully claims that the basis for his book has been the official records, rather than press reports.

My query relates to the opening statement Tully credits the Dr who entered the room. He allegedly describes the appearance of the room, & says "I attach a photo".

I'm wondering if this is one of the well known photo's, or could relate to other photo's taken at the time?

That would relate to Dr. Phillips, who did bring a series of photos to the inquest that had been taken after Kelly's murder. Some of the photos have since emerged but most, like many documents to this case, are still missing.
    Best Wishes,
    Hunter

      Hello Hunter!

      Just wondering;

How many are completely missig and how many are just somewhere in the archives?!

      A tough question, probably...

      All the best

No one knows for sure how many photos were taken. The two interior photos that are posted here and one exterior that is believed to have been taken at that time are all that are available but it is almost certain there were more at sometime.
Maybe someone could find a decendent of Dr. Phillips. Who knows what may be in a dusty attic?

As a historian, my field of research has been the American Civil War. Talking to decendants of soldiers from that period I have even come across complete uniforms and many letters that were stored away and forgotten. Any further artifacts on the Ripper case will probably be found in the same manner although it is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but what a joy when that proverbial needle shows up.
        Best Wishes,
        Hunter

I was wondering if there was any awareness of whether the photo the Dr refers is one of the ones we are aware of.

IIRC the police removed the window for photographs to be taken.

The turn of the Dr's statement indicates the picture shows the whole room, as it is a statement I assume is supposed to save the Dr eplaining the layout of the whole room in detail. I took it that the photo would show the whole room.

I assume the phtot wasn't included in the official inquest records?
