Thanks, Chris - I can't recall seeing that little gem before.
That said, the sketch shows a rather natty table in the middle of the room, some intact chairs, and no bedside table. In addition, there appears to be a rather stout candle (complete with a "Wee Willie Winkie" style candle-holder!) and a ginger beer bottle conveniently placed on the mantelpiece. Added to which, the detective is pointing to a presumably clue-free patch of flooring. This suggests to me that the artist made a lot of the scene up, for illustrative purposes (in the broadest sense).
Its a very interesting sketch....but using the scale of the men as a guide, its about 20 feet wide.
Cheers all
Yes okay I agree that in the sketch everything is distorted in terms of the size of the room. However that being said, the bed is facing the right way, toward the fireplace, and there's a picture above the hearth, presumably "The Fisherman's Widow" so we are not that far off. Just trying to give you an idea, people. Again look at the photograph. What's the bolster resting on ("A" as I designated it)???

It (which I see as a blanket, rather than a bolster, by the way) seems to have been resting on the right side of the mattress. I say that, because the mattress appears to extend rather close to the wall, and the blanket/whatever seems to be partly abutting onto the partition.

If you look closely at the mattress itself, the lower half of it was pushed toward the partition to support the "bolster/blanket". (Maybe done intentionally by photographer to support camera?) The headboard is indeed away from the partition wall several inches which actually makes the bed sit at an angle towards the partition. The wash tin, underneath the bed, in my opinion, is being used to support the lower half of the bed.

I think the bolster is beyond the edge of the mattress. You can see something whitish (or woodenish?) below the bolster. Again what I am saying is I see a gap between the side of the bed and the partition, as shown by the red hatched area in the below diagram. Look where the left bedpost on the headboard is compared to the partition. . . the gap allows for the disused sink to go in there and also was where the second, smaller, MJK photograph was taken from, albeit as Simon has said, the bed may have also been shoved over to an angle to take that photograph looking toward the door.

Before we start using the same terms for multiple objects...I believe your red A is marking bedding that is rolled and stuffed in the space between the bed and wall...as jerryd indicated....nice to see you by the way JD....the "bolster" which is akin to a body pillow that goes across the head of the bed when fully made up,.. is on the night table with some of Marys internal materials.
I think its is possible the bedding was there and never rolled out that night to use properly by Mary...but it also might have been put there and used as a stand for a remote shutter camera to shoot MJK3 from her right side.

Yes okay, whatever you call it, but my point is that it is sitting on something. It's not suspended in mid-air between the bed and the wall (partition). That's why I am saying it was likely on the disused dry sink that is mentioned as having been in the room.
