  • Why Barnett left Buller's lodging house

At the inquest of Kelly, on November 12th, Barnett stated:
Until Saturday last I lived at 24, New-street, Bishopsgate, and have since stayed at my sister's, 21, Portpool-lane, Gray's Inn-road.
The New Street address was Buller's Lodging House, and Barnett left there, according to his testimony, on the day after the murder, 10 November.
I have found a press account today which states that Barnett's leaving of Buller's was not voluntary. This is part of a long article in Freeman's Journal (Dublin) of 12 November 1888
    The relevant passage reads:
"Inquiries for the man Barnett, who had lived with the murdered woman, at Buller's Lodging House, New Street, Bishopsgate Street, have been so numerous that the landlord states he has turned Barnett out of his house, his presence there having become a nuisance."

    Hi Chris,

I guess the salient part of that newspaper report is that "Inquiries for the man Barnett... have been so numerous". I guess Buller's landlord, and perhaps the residents, were getting fed up with all the press and police attention caused by their inadvertent "celebrity lodger".
    Kind regards, Sam Flynn
