  • Charles Brittain - Bucks Row

    Hello

Included in the 1881 Census for Bucks Row is :

    Head
    Charles Bretton: aged 22
    Born Essex
    Horse keeper
    Wife
    Annie Bretton: aged 20
    Born Whitechapel

Has anyone checked out this Charles Bretton, the horse keeper, against the Winthrop St slaughter man ?

Does anyone know where the Barber`s Charles Brittain was living in 1888, or his age ?

    Appreciated

    Hi Jon,

In the 1891 Census Charles Britton [note the spelling] aged 32 - Slaughterman - was living at No. 42 Winthrop Street.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Simon

      Hey up Simon

      Thanks for the quick response.

Interesting, the two men are the same age.

The following is in the Casebook files on the spelling :

Charles Brittain (a.k.a. Brittan, Britten, Britton)

Got to be the same man ?

With transcribed census and other data it is worth checking the original documents rarther than just the transcription. For incatnce my great-grandfather's name is miss-spelt on the transcription of the 1881 census but a look at the original doc shows that the name is correctly spelt but was miss-transcribed.

It is also worth remembering that the majority of thee people living in the East End at this time were unable to read or write (compulsory elementary education had only started in the 1870's so it is unlikely that anyone above the age of 20 had ever gone to school) so spelling of names is likely to be imaginative and variable.
