It has often been stated that the ripper made unsuccessful attemps to behead his victims, the throat being cut through to the vertebrae (except in Stride's case), but there some reasons to doubt of it.
My feeling is that if JtR really tried to decapitate Nichols, and failed to, because his knife was not strong enough, he might have chosen a proper instrument in later murders.
He did not.(Nick Warren believes a hatchet has been used in Miller's court: if so, decapitation is certainly not part of JtR's fantasies.)
Surely the topic has already been discussed, but as a newcomer I'd like to know if the idea is now completely dismissed or not.
