You assume the killer cared if he was heard.
However, it's possible he was heard by Harriet Lilley on Bucks Row and by Cadosch in Hanbury Street.
We have no idea if the killer manhandled Nichols of course.
I submit, the view the killer was careful in his behaviour, is simply an assumption, and that is fine, but it is still an assumption.
