  • What happened to Liz's grave?

I've been trying to find Eilzabeth Stride's grave in time for the 30th of September but last year when I went down to East London Cemetery to find it, it wasn't there. Even stranger was when I spoke to the rector of the cemetery he said that nobody by the name of Elizabeth Stride, Elisabeth Gustafsdotter or any variation was ever buried here. I even looked in the cemetery ledger and no one was buried in 1888 by the name Stride or any other variation. Either she isn't buried there, the cemetery moved site or the rector does this to deter Ripperologists.
I want to find it by her anniversery to pay my respects so can you guys help me find it before then.

    Hi,

All I know is that she was buried in a paupers grave. Perhaps the site of those graves was cleared at some time? And perhaps people felt they didn't have to register those graves, because it was unlikely anyone would come for them?

I do believe there is a picture of the grave in the picture section. Perhaps there is some information there?

    Greetings,

    Addy

Thanks Addy, I know this was the point with Annie Chapman as well, but the picture appears to be quite recent and it doesn't explain why there was no record of her at that cemetery. I can only summise that she is in a different cemetery all together and I've spoken to John De Pope and he doesn't even know.

Perhaps you could try to find out where paupers were buried in those days. I suppose that there was one cemetery per neigbourhood for the poor who couldn't afford their funeral.

Or perhaps someone who did a Ripper walk can give some more information?

        Greetings,

        Addy

          Baron, Addy,

Stride's grave is still there (here's a shot I took earlier this year).

In the meantime, this piece by Andy Spalleck will tell you how to find it (and the other victims' graves). It is very good and helped me find them all quite easily.

P.S. I believe Annie Chapman now has a marker at Manor Park cemetery, though it just sits in the general area of her grave.

Thanks for the help John, I can only guess the guys at the cemetery were trying to deter me. Still, I believe that Elizabeth's grave needs a bit of tending to in respect to her and Annie needs at least some rememberence as well. Does anyone agree...?

It's a hard call. Given her significance and the state of the grave I would say the local authorities are being reasonably effective in keeping people away if indeed that is their aim. I'm wondering if they aren't right. Rest in Peace and so forth.
