I've always been fascinated by the story behind Mary Malcolm's identification of Liz stride as her sister Elizabeth Watts and her reasons for doing so. I never had a problem with the idea that Liz Stride may even have been passing herself off as Mary's sister, especially since reading in some papers that Michael Kidney said there was a resemblence between Mrs Malcolm and Elizabeth Stride.
Anyway, I'm now puzzled by something else and wonder if anyone can help me out?

We know from the newspaper accounts that Mary Malcolm's husband was named Andrew and was also a tailor, so I agree with Chris that this entry seems to fit the known facts. The puzzling thing is the 1881 entry.
I've rechecked the census and Augustine Delamare was in fact a male and Mary is listed as his daughter (Andrew is listed as son in law)
Now, here's the puzzling bit. Using the newspaper account Elizabeth Stokes gave of her life also posted in the same post by Chris, I managed to trace Elizabeth Stokes back with her parents and her subsequent three marriages, first to Edward William Watts in Bristol, second to Joseph Sneller in Eastry registration district and third marriage to Joseph Stokes.
On her first marriage she married under her maiden name of Elizabeth Perren.
Using this I found her and her family living in Colerne near Chippenham Wiltshire in various census entries.
She did also have a sister Mary b 1842 as well as other siblings named in various newspaper reports that all match up as does the location mentioned.
However, Elizabeth and Mary's father's name was Aquila Perren not Augustine (or Augustus as per 1871) Delamare! And he died sometime before 1851.
Did Mary Malcolm just go around collecting waifs and strays and claiming them as family?
There must be a simple explanation, but I can't seem to find one!

As regards Mrs. Malcolm, although I have not yet been able to trace the date of her marriage, this appears to have taken place between 1871 and 1881. In the 1871 census I have found her husband to be, Andrew Malcolm, listed as an unmarried lodger:
29 Broad Street, Golden Square, Westminster
Lodger:
Andrew Malcolm aged 22 born Glasgow - Tailor
By 1881, the two had married and were living with Mary's mother:
47 Baldwins Gardens, London
Head:
Augustine Delamare aged 73 born Middlesex - Widow - Ink maker
Son in Law:
Andrew Malcolm aged 32 born Scotland - Tailor
Mary Malcolm aged 37 born Bath - Tailoress
The 1891 census lists the two living alone:
3 Cranmer House, Fox Court, Holborn
Andrew Malcolm aged 43 born Glasgow - Tailor
Mary Malcolm aged 43 born Bath, Wiltshire - Tailoress
