  • Photo of Eddowes?

What's the provenance of this alleged 1883 photo? Do we know if it's actually Catherine Eddowes?

Judging from the pic (assuming it's credible), she wasn't a bad-looking lass before she fell on hard times.

That's quite a nice dress from a lower class working woman.

Is that an earring near her left ear, or hair?

Where did this photograph come from? If there is any photo of the face of Catherine when she was murdered, does it look like this at all?

Earrings didn't tend be that large back then.

I know, that's why I asked, but on my tablet it looks more like an earring than hair.

There are two mortuary photos of Kate here on Casebook, in her entry as a Victim. I think the general shape of the face is similar.

I've seen it doing the rounds on Google images and it's currently being used on Eddowes' wikipedia page. Beyond that, I don't know where it originates from.

The photograph looks as if it could be of a Civil War era American lady. Significantly the photo is cropped so we can't get a full sense of the dress she is wearing. I am betting if we could see the whole gown it would be of obviously Civil War vintage. In any case the woman looks much too well to do for a woman like Catherine Eddowes.

As far as I am aware..There are threads going back at least 5 years on this photo..the origin was found and twas thus shown to be a false claim.
If you look around on here I'm sure you will find it.

The photograph appeared on an Australian blog, posted in 2009. The same person has equally doubtful photographs in life of Mary Ann Nichols and Elizabeth Stride. As we know, the only verifiable photograph of a canonical Jack the Ripper victim taken while the woman was alive is that of Annie Chapman, taken on her wedding day in 1880.

I agree. The hairstyle, jewellery and what can be seen of the bodice and dropped sleeves is not from the early 1880's. Take twenty years from that date, IMO. Don't think it's Kate anyway.

No. I am certain it is not Kate. And as for the blogger's supposed photograph of Liz Stride, it was dismissed effectively by Daniel Olssen in Ripperologist 141.

I don't think it's Kate or Liz!! How many of these false photos of Ripper victims are on dodgy internet sites at the one time!
