  • Just come across an ancestor of Catherine

    Hiya.

Reading a thread on the Something Awful forum, regarding interesting moments in your family history, I came across a poster who claims to be a direct ancestor of Catherine Eddowes.

I just thought that maybe someone with an account there would like to contact him/her, see if they have any info. Never know, might find some pics.

I won't post the users name here because I don't have their permission (oh yeah, I would ask myself but being part of the proletariat, I cannot afford the 10 dollers needed to sign up.) but the page is here...

Free to view, the post is just past half way down the page, you can't miss it as he has stuck up one of the autopsy pictures in his post.

    Cheers.

P.s. It's a good thread, sure some here would be interested.

    Nice spot!

(although I think you might mean 'descendant' rather than 'ancestor')
Roll up the lino, Mother. We're raising Behemoth tonight!

      Ohhh yeah. hehe.

I was going to try and turn this round, digging myself out by making a joke about time travel but it got too paradoxical and now I've got migraine.

Anyway, I hope something can come of it, no doubt it won't though.

Ripperology seems to be for the optimists. I'm well out of my depth!

      Cheers.

Triplesod - have you been taking Cake?

See - you thought no one would get your obscure ID, didn't you?

I had a look at the thread but there's really nothing to go on at the moment. They could be mistaken, they could be lieing, they could be right but have just posted up a random image of CE having no idea who it is. The post hardly seems to be serious.

          Hi Phillip.

Funnily enough, I have not thought about my username for years now, pretty much for as long as the series is old but for some strange reason, I when registering this new account (posted a few times before the great crash of whenever it was), I just got a feeling it would be mentioned by someone here. Very strange.

Regarding the post. You could be right and most probably are. I don't know if you are used to that forum but it does show the typical way those members post.

I do believe the person has been told they have a victim in their family and possibly that it was Eddowes but whether there is anything more than family myth there is impossible to know. If if it is completely true, it is unlikely anything can come from it.

Our of our great grandparents, we have some info on one, that is the plaque and certificate sent to his parents when he was killed at the Somme. Even though we know who he is and where he died, we cannot find anything about his life before the war, so I would presume, descendants (cheers Steje;-) of the C5 would have even less memorabilia or information.

          Cheers

If I had a £1 for every alleged relative of a victim or suspect I have been in contact with in the last sixth months I would be richer than Philip Hutchinson!

Only a very small amount of these have any truth, and they are not very open about their connections.

It's a path frought with dangers, do your homework and be careful!

            Other than that good luck
            Regards Mike

              Hi Mike.

I would like to believe that people are more straight forward and honest, without the need for attention but I have enough experience of people to know better.

Oh well. I'll bow to your experience.

              Thanks for the advice.

              Cheers.

                Hi Triplesod(!!!!!!!!!)

Look a lot of these things come up from time to time from nutters various....OK there may be someone/thing genuine here,or out there... but call me dubious...I doubt it...mainly from the use of the Kate mortuary pic.....slightly crass I say...hardly a pic of 'great great somebody' is it!!!!Just something picked up to maybe make a claim!

Don't get over excited I say....a lot of good people have spent a lot of good time researching these things...Catherine/Annie especially ...I would tread VERRRRRRRY carefully if I were you.

Quite frankly,as Phillip and Mike say- very few things have credence ....especially on a site such as this one came from!

To be honest Triplesod- MOST families have a family member of some description who was lost in WW1- a terribly ,terribly sad thing but I'm sure that it's true...hardly a family can be proud(!) of, -although, not losing someone in that terrible carnage, could be something else again!!

If you're in any doubt about WW1 and all that -read 'Birdsong' by Sebastian Faulks (albeit a 'fictional account') and weep!

                    Hi Suzi(!!!!!!!!!!);-)

I understand the weariness but I honestly say that the way the poster has mentioned his ancestor is really no sign that he/she is making it up for humour or any other reasons. You really need to know the forum to realise this. It may be crass but that is the fashion of the place, it is Something Awful after all.
It is a comedy forum and the people there are drawn by the darker sides of life.
It may leave a bad taste in your mouth but it is normal there for several pages about Maddie McCann, involving only puns. It would be very unlikely that respect is shown for a great-great Grandma, when the posters there will likely discuss their direct family members, being as derogatory as possible all the way.

The way it was posted was in a humorous way, ie, "yes, I see that you have all posted about having royal bloodlines, heroic acts in the Civil War, World changing people but all I've got is a poor prostitute who was part of one of the Worlds most notorious events... haHA!".

My point about my Great Grandfather in the Great War was for no other reason that to say that that is the only person past my Grandparents that we know anything about and we know very little about him at that. It was in response to Phillip's post. I was agreeing with him that even if it was true, they would probably have anything of interest to pass on to us.

I will be sure to check out your recommendation anyway.
                    Thanks for you post.

EDIT: I've just ordered Birdsong from Amazon for a penny + £2 P&P. So, thanks again for the recommendation. There are plenty more copies available for teh same price, if anyone is interested.

Hi T'sod (sorry abt the !!!)

Glad you've ordered 'Birdsong...brace yourself...read... and I'll be interested to see what you think (A bargain from Amazon 'eh!)

Hmmm a 'comedy forum' 'eh OK I'll go with that - there are many-But there are many that aren't totally at times.

.....Kate and the rest of 'The C5 Girls' are REAL people with real lives which we merely pick at to get their reality. ....Meanwhile we live in hope!

Sorry didn't mean to sound crabby there but hope you get my gist!

That wouldn't be difficult, Mike. Just where does this idea come from that I'm rich? I get rare Ripper books and what have you because I don't drive, smoke, drink, socialise much or have a family to pay for.
