From Inspector Chandler, regarding the disposition of the body as it lay in the yard,....."After the body had been taken away I examined the yard, and found a piece of coarse muslin, a small tooth comb, and a pocket hair comb in a case. They were lying near the feet of the woman. A portion of an envelope was found near her head, which contained two pills.
[Coroner] What was on the envelope? - On the back there was a seal with the words, embossed in blue, "Sussex Regiment." The other part was torn away. On the other side there was a letter "M" in writing.
As we know, there is also the little matter of a ring...the contention being that brass rings that had been seen on her finger by witnesses were absent when she was found. That little tidbit was not likely discovered until she was examined off site, which means that her ring could have been taken at the scene, or sometime before she was stripped and washed.
The absence of the rings might be explained by petty theft after the murder was discovered, the items at her feet and head, not so much.
What do people make of these items?
