    Hi Phil,

Surely Eddowes would have had to pay the pawnbroker 9d [plus any interest] in order to redeem the shirt.

    Regards,

    Simon

I guess newspaper articles and writings and rambings of ageing police officers go hand in glove. Simple fact is you cannot safely rely on anyone or anyhting.

          Hello Simon,

I mis-read this completely.. "had been" "popped" meant that you are correct.. why would Eddowes get 9d for a popped item? The pawbroker would get it, as you say.

          Hello John,

Somebody can shake the mothballs out of Special Branch... if anyone knows anybody willing to play Ripperleaks at the SY archives?
All I know is that one person who then worked there featured on Noel Edmund's Game Show Deal or No Deal a while ago. He didn't win a lot of money, so there's a chance he is still slaving away...lol

          best wishes

              suspicion

Hello Phil. Thanks. Are you suggesting that John did some "doctoring" of his account to avoid undue suspicion? That's possible. As it turned out, he was given a clean bill of health by his interviewers.

              Cheers.

If newspapers and police officials are potentially unreliable or even useless as contemporary sources, then new discoveries are important to confirm or dispel what has gone before. That's all I can say really!

                  The whole shooting match.

                  Hello Simon. Thanks. Can't disagree.

                  Cheers.

                    sensible

Hello Trevor. Thanks. I agree, yet what John is saying about coming back early and having a hard time makes a good bit more sense than the inquest version.

                    Cheers.

No not all only those that have sought to prop up suspects and other important issues using those methods without a doubt are.

                        redeeming feature

Hello Simon. Thanks. Hard to say. If they had that ticket for three weeks, not sure how it worked.

                        When did they redeem it?

                        Cheers.

                          Hello Trevor,

As Kelly was telling porkies at the inquest, and telling porkies here in this article, the question has surely got to be.... why?

                          best wishes

                            Por que?

Hello Phil. Thanks. Yes, that is the question--why? Could be important; could be trivial.

                            Cheers.

                              Hi Lynn,

They didn't redeem the shirt. She still had the pawn ticket in her mustard tin.

Major Smith painted John Kelly as long-suffering.

                              Blackwoods Magazine, May 1906—

Her [Eddowes] "husband"—bad as he was, he was good for her—I found fairly intelligent, and with a certain amount of confidence in and chivalrous feeling for the miserable being with whom he lived. God knows how his confidence was abused".

"She drank a bit, sir," he admitted, "but I am sure she would never do anything wrong."

"I don't want, I assure you," I said, "at such a time to hurt your feelings, but what was she doing about Aldgate and Mitre Square at that hour?"

"Well, sir, you see," he replied, "this is how it was: she had a daughter, very comfortable, living in Bermondsey; and whenever we were hard up she would go across to her, and she never came back without something."

This story I was disinclined to believe, seeing that he could not, or would not, tell me where the daughter lived; but after a great deal of trouble, having discovered the woman in question, I found she had not seen her mother for years. How the money was got when times were hard does not call for an explanation from me. That explanation "the streets of London" will afford.

                              Regards,

                              Simon

                                Hello Lynn,

Annoying that.. but I have to say that the police didn't follow up his story at all.. didn't chase down the old woman to confirm she had passed on the message to John Kelly.. didn't realise that the old woman recognised Eddowes and therefore Eddowes was known to her, didn't realise that as she knew Kelly he was known to her, didn't realise or ask how the devil she knew WHERE to go to give Kelly the message, and didn't realise that the old woman was known to both Eddowes and Kelly. Also they didn't check the story of Kelly and the Lodging House attendant carefully enough because apparently the old woman gave the message BEFORE Eddowes was carted off to clink to sober up. Now even if the Lodging House keeper was an hour out and misquoted the old lady's time, the old lady STILL wouldn't have had time to get to Flower and Dean Street to give the message, which means that the whole story is rubbish.
And nobody gets a story 2 hours wrong. That's silly.
All that on top of the story of Eddowes staying at a place she could not have left at the time stated...again from Kelly. On top of the fact that because of the lodging House attendants conflicting comments, John Kelly could easily have gone out of the LH without being noticed, and come back without being noticed too.

So checking out Kelly as ok... well now... not sure about that Lynn... they didn't check him out very well did they?

If I am correct, John Kelly died in about 1892... correct? Due to a long term illness?

                                best wishes

                                Phil
