  • names changing in Mitre square ?

    Hi everybody:
i've been to Aldgate two times this Spring, and had somethiong unclear : St James passage enters Mitre Square where it was supposed to be "Church passage": dis the names changed, or what ? And if so, when?

Thank you... felt a little confused in the place, facing a school fence and benches……

View From Eddowes Murder Site Towards Church Passage & Duke Street.

(Church Passage Is Now Much Wider - Was 3' Wide in 1888)
St James' Passage exits Mitre Square to the north-west towards St James' Place. Church Passage, which was very narrow in 1888, runs between Mitre Square and Dukes Place (formerly Duke Street). Hope that helps. If you've not seen it the "East End Photographs and Drawings Thread" (under Scenes of the Crimes) is well worth a visit and, as you might expect, both locations feature several times.

    Regards, Bridewell.
