He was looking for the note from his Fenian leader about where he should kill next. She was always the messenger, and the orders has always been in her hat before.
This is my point with my Fenian remark. Satire used to be such a useful tool...sigh.
Mike
I got it, Mike. But it seems that some need even the simple stuff spelled out. God knows how they'd ever recognise a genuine Fenian clue, never mind decipher it.
Blimey, talk about trying to make something out of nothing.
Since it was the custom of women such as the deceased to keep 'valuables' such as coins or pawn tickets in their bonnet, I doubt Kate's old man would have sat there working out whether or not hers was likely to contain anything and thought to himself "Nah, not worth looking".
Kelly would have tried to make something out of 'Nothing', dead or alive. I can see that.
There's shades of other Ripper red herrings in this report, like the story about the bloody washstand or the grapes being used to lure victims or even, despite it being one of my own pet theories, the story about "Pipeman" carrying a knife.....there's any number of them and the vast majority would result from misinterpretations or over-eager journalistic reporting.
No doubt it's an interesting reference but it makes little sense to suggest that Kelly was searching for anything of substantial value on his partner, given what we know of their final movements....
Eddowes wore a pair of calico pockets attached by strings for her personal possessions. I understood a number of those women would wear such secreted pockets for money & things that were out of reach of pickpockets.
A hat isn't the best place for valuables, maybe he was looking for something else.
But any mugger would be sure to get women to empty these pockets, so it would be surely a good idea to leave just a little in the pocket and the rest in the hat ?
Kelly knew that Kate's killer had got any money she might have had in the pocket, and he looked to see if there was any in the hat.

So why would he rummage through her hat, "a place of concealment"? He knew she hadn't any money. If she had, she'd still be alive.
Looking for something else?

There should have been a poll with this thread, asking whether we find the hat story intriguing or not.
I would have voted no, but all details are interesting.
