  • Eddowes photograph

In a fairly recently published Swedish book on Jack the Ripper the author claims that the body of Catherine Eddowes was strung up on a wall in order to take a full-length photograph.

Would they really have done this to the poor woman?

I believe the picture is in one of the (recent) threads on the pictures of Eddowes. And indeed, yes they did.

      Greetings,

      Addy

Hi Curious, are you referring to the book by our own Glenn Andersson? I miss seeing him around, even though I can't agree with about anything he says on the Stride murder!

On the wall of the mortuary were three positionable pegs. Two were positioned under each arm to keep her body up and her hair was tied to another to keep her head up for the photo.

        Yours truly,

        Tom Wescott

One has to wonder why this was done to Kate Eddowes but apparently not to any of the other victims? Or was it done to them also and the photos have gone missing?

          Cheers,
          Adam.

Robert Mclaughlin also commented on this instance with Eddowes on the one episode of "Rippercast" I believe. And in fact, yes, she is actually suspended by her hair. This was probably done to get the "scope" of the horror that was done to her body. It was also probably one of the suggestions of the City police (Although thats an assumption don't go by my word) to photograph what this brutal killer was capable of.

            Regards,
            Justin

Yes, Glenn Andersson. Not the best I`ve read and a bit wobbly on some details - picking oakum is not ropemaking - and I got the impression he wasnīt sure what canonical means - but not bad and some good photographs.

P.S. Thanks for the clarification! I donīt agree with him on Stride either!

                      Hello you all!

I disagree with Glenn too to some degree.... Or enough to include Liz as a victim!

Well, Diddles; an interesting user name indeed. But remember the old saying; curiosity killed the cat!

The poor woman looks emaciated, almost to the point of looking skeletal. I'm sure those women got little if anything to eat at all ever. All the more reason to pitty them.
