  • Tumblety's First Will

    Greetings all,

I transcribed this from the New York Daily Tribune, Thursday, August 20, 1903:

    "NEW WILL CUTS DOWN CARDINAL

Filed in Baltimore by Clews in Tumblety Estate.
    [BY TELEGRAPH TO THE TRIBUNE]
Baltimore, Aug. 19.-Henry Clews & Co. of New York, have filed in the Orphans’ Court her a second and earlier will of Dr. Francis J. Tumblety who died in St. Louis in May last, but it will not be probated unless a later will, now on file in St. Louis, is rejected. The estate of Dr. Tumblety amounting to $135,000, is on deposit with Henry Clews & Co. The St. Louis will, it is said, will be contested on the ground that the testator was of unsound mind when he executed it.

Under the St. Louis will Cardinal Gibbons and Archbishop Ireland receive $10,000 each. The will here leaves $1,000 to Cardinal Gibbons and a like amount to the Home of the Friendless, while the residue of the estate goes to the testator’s heirs at law, relatives living in Rochester, Ireland, California and Texas, who will probably unite to have the St. Louis will set aside."

To me, it's interesting that although giving to the Catholic Church was a concern of Tumblety's at a time when mortality was less of an issue, the amount of giving dramatically increased when reality was setting in. That definately showed he had a sound mind!

    Sincerely,

    Mike
