  • Sailing from Le Havre to US Dec 1888 - passenger list

"Francis Tumblety returned to Liverpool in June of 1888, and once again found himself at odds with the police. He was arrested on November 7th, 1888 on charges of gross indecency and indecent assault with force and arms against four men between July 27th and November 2. These eight charges were euphemisms for homosexual activities. Tumblety was then charged on suspicion of the Whitechapel murders on the 12th (suggested he was free to kill Kelly between the 7th and 12th). Tumblety was bailed on November 16th. A hearing was held on November 20th at the Old Bailey, and the trial postponed until December 10th. Tumblety then fled to France under the alias ‘Frank Townsend’ on the 24th, and from there took the steamer La Bretagne to New York City."

The dates of arrival of La Bretagne in the US during 1888 were as follows:-
    2 Jan
    26 Mar
    23 April
    21 May
    25 Jun
    23 Jul
    27 Aug
    29 Oct
    3 Dec
    31 Dec

It is apparent from these dates that the sailing on which Tumblety must have sailed from Le Havre to the US was that arriving on 3 December 1888. Below is a list of male passengers on that sailing. The good doctor is not listed under the name of Tumblety or his other known alias of Frank Townsend.
Any guesses as to which, if any, of these might be a cover for Tumblety?

He used alieses, like Townsend and Blackburn. Maybe he sticks with Irish or English surnames. Also, I bet any multiple last names generally indicates multiple family members, so maybe those names should be least emphasized.

If my memory serves me well, Tumblety is on the original passenger list, as Townsend, but not on the transcribed list.
