  • Tumblety and the press

When Tumblety fled to America newspapers from all over the world covered the event. However, not one English paper picked up on the story. The London papers were full of Ripper stories. Tom Bullen was likely responsible for giveing the East end killer his trade name. The London papers were Ripper crazy and printed any story that had the slightest connection but yet when it came to Tumblety, silence. Even if the papers were reluctant to print Tumblety's name they still could have printed the story leaving out the suspects name.

Obviously the story was squashed. The powers that be were trying to coverup something. It has been suggested that the press were covering up for the police and the fact that the police had let the Ripper slip through their fingers. I dont buy that theory. Since when did the press care about protecting the reputation of the police. No, the story was squashed to protect those who were responsible for stopping the story.

Littlechild names Tumblety as a likely suspect. Littlechild would have been the person in charge of any investigation involving a possible plot against Mr. Balfour. Macnaoughten had claimed to connect the Ripper to the leader of an assasination plot against Mr. Balfour. I have heard that Special Branch and the Ripper investigation crossed paths. They crossed paths right here and what evidence there was against Tumblety regarding the Ripper murders was connected to the Balfour assasination plot. The powers that be who squashed the story about Tumblety fleeing to America did not want the plot against Balfour to see the light of day.

Why obviously was the story squashed? I am sorry but I seriously do not think that anyone anywhere would have been able to "squash" a story of that nature. There were dozens of rags, what possible incentive or power would have enabled them to squash a story? I would think it more likely that the newspapers didn't really consider a homosexual who wasn't the Ripper anyway going to New York sufficiently interesting to write about. And if they newspapers weren't interested in protecting the police so you don't believe that's a valid reasons to squash the story, who precisely would they have been interested in protecting to the point that ALL of them would have squashed the story? The answer is no one. And considering that NONE of the newspapers who did pick up on the Tumblety story in any way mentioned anything relating to a Balfour plot, the idea that Someone Somewhere was worried that the British papers would somehow pick up on some intangible and unlikely connection between Tumblety and a supposed Balfour plot is additionally implausible.

    In short, doubtful.
