Hi all,
1873 was eventful for Tumblety. He began it in Cincinnati then opened up an office in Pittsburgh. His favorite young man (Mark Blackburn) got married on him, his mother passed away at the end of May, and he left for Liverpool in July. Note the Want ad in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on May 14, 1873:
WANTED - HELP - MALES
WANTED - BOY - ABOUT 15 YEARS
of age. Inquire at Fifth Avenue and Bergen st.
Now, this may not have been posted by Tumblety, but he was in Brooklyn just before he left for Liverpool, we do know he preferred young men and solicited them in this manner, and the other help wanted ads for boys all stated a specific reason (retail, servant, labor, etc).
