Amanda, if you look at the thread 'Death of D'Onson's wife' on Stephenson suspects you will see that Anne Deary was alive in 1911 living with her sister and brother in law. D'Onson probably abandoned her, he did not murder her as believed by Mervyn Harris. That is one of the bricks in Harris's theory that he was the ripper.
Harris believed he married a servant to revenge himself on his parents because he was forbidden to marry the love of his life, a prostitute, Ada/ Louise. There is no proof this prostitute existed. It could just be another tall tale of D'Onson's.

Thanks...
Hi MayBea,
Mm, I have all the info regarding families, the wedding, careers etc
I've found that Annie Deary was working as a housekeeper for Robert's brother just before they moved to London to wed.
As the Stephenson's were fairly well-off, I was wondering why Robert would marry beneath his class unless he 'had to' so to speak.

RDS married Anne Deary at St James Church Islington, London, in 1876.
And they were both from Yorkshire.
I doubt it was a shotgun wedding, unless it was a very long shotgun.
A marriage of convenience maybe, for him, being a freelancer...

Question about Robert Stephenson
Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has information about Robert D'Onston Stephenson's marriage to Annie Deary.
What I'm specifically trying to find out is if they married for love or was it possibly a shotgun wedding due to her being pregnant?
Any info greatly appreciated.
