    The landlord of The Prince Albert, 5 Upper St Martins Lane, throughout the 1880s appears to be Stephen Dutneal who in 1881 is listed as living there with his wife and 5 daughters (now that's what you call skirting the issue).

      Apologies, Chris. I was working somewhat from memory there. Stephen Dutneall or Dutnull doesn't show as the landlord of The Prince Albert after 1884 so it was probably Jeremiah Iles in 1888 as implied by Stephenson. Litchfield Street, where Iles managed The **** in 1881 is just around the corner from where The Prince Albert was. Here's a photo I took yesterday of what I think used to be The Prince Albert, the blue painted building on the right.

      The redbrick building next door is the offices of Equity, the actors' etc union and the street next to that on the left of the photo is Litchfield Street.
