1863 Robert D’Onston Stephenson leaves an entry in a book of Muster Rolls “Robert D’O Stephenson, Age 22, Height 5’10, Address Sculcoates, Hull” The Sculcoates is altered and now reads “4 River Terrace, North Islington“, the same address as Rev Prest in the 1861 Census. This is held at the Bishopgate Institute, and it was a list compiled by a gentleman called George Jacob Holyoake who was responsible for the recruitment of the British volunteers.
1863 Robert D’Onston Stephenson claims to have met Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton.
1863 Robert D’Onston Stephenson is alleged to have visited the West coast of Africa to study witchcraft were he murders a woman witch doctor. He openly admits to the deed later and writes into a local paper with the story. Again we rely on Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s own recollections of his life.

1868 July 11th Monday Bridlington Free Press carries story relating to the shooting of Robert D’Onston Stephenson.

SERIOUS GUN ACCIDENT
On Tuesday last, Mr Stephenson of the Custom House, Hull, engaged a yacht at the Quay, and with a friend left the harbour for a days shooting at Flamboro’ From some cause the lock of his friends gun hung fire and while examining it to ascertain the gun went off and lodged its contents in in the thigh of Mr Stephenson. Although greatly alarmed and much affected by the accident his friend, who from experience was able to tender all possible assistance, brought him to shore and had him conveyed to the Black Lion Hotel, Bridlington, where surgical aid was promptly obtained and several of the shot extracted. We are happy to say he is progressing very favourably and it is hoped he will soon be able to get about again.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO A HULL GENTLEMAN
On Tuesday afternoon last Mr. R.D.O. Stephenson of Her Majesty’s Customs at this port, while cruising off Flamborough, on board the yacht Flying Scud, met with a serious accident. The party on board were shooting seabirds and Mr. Stephenson was standing just abaft the mast, waiting for a shot when a boatman belonging to the yacht, who was behind him, took up one of the guns to fire and managed to explode prematurely, sending the whole charge into the back part of Mr. Stephenson’s thigh.
The heavy charge (1.1/2ozs of No2 shot) at a distance of about two yards tore a jagged hole, about 1.1/2inches wide and the same depth, and lodged itself in a lump near the bone, which, however it miraculously failed to injure. Fortunately a gentleman was on board who had some surgical experience, and immediately applied temporary bandages. The unfortunate gentleman was landed at Flamborough as soon as possible, and carried to the top of the cliff by a stalwart young fisherman. The only available conveyance being a fish cart, belonging to the landlord of the inn, it was filled with clean straw, and the patient conveyed to Bridlington; where under the skilful hands of Drs. Brett and Mackay, the greater part of the shot were removed. We are informed by eyewitnesses that the sang-froid with which the sufferer treated his terrible and painful wound was something remarkable, and excited the warmest admiration and sympathy in the bystanders. We understand that there is every hope of saving the limb. Provided that neither erysipelas nor gangrene (the two great dangers in gunshot wounds) make their appearance. Mr. Edwin Gray timber merchant, Hull, very kindly superintended the landing at Flamborough.

Ex-Councillor Stephenson In Trouble Again
At the Hull Police Court, yesterday, Richard Stephenson Jnr, was summoned for taking unlawful measures to remove Francis Roe from the house occupied by him.
Mr Summers appeared for the complainant and Mr Hearfield for the defence. Complainant said he was the tenant of the house next to the Chapel on Church Street, Sculcoates. He had acted as Chapel Keeper. Two years ago a new chapel was built in Lincoln Street, and the old chapel then shut up, but was afterwards let to the School Board in June 1872. In September last he had a reduction of rent and paid for the quarter on the 3rd Dec. On the 17th January last, defendant came to his house between two and three in the afternoon by the back way. He said to him (complainant) “Are you going to give me the key?” Witness replied “No” Defendant then said was he going to pay his 5s per week rent, and he again replied in the negative. Nothing more was said, but several men who had been employed by the defendant commenced to take the doors off. They took off four doors, two in the front, one in the passageway and one at the back. Two men then fetched a ladder and commenced to take the tiles off the roof. They took about 100 off altogether. Witness remonstrated with defendant and his wife called him a villain and said he should pay for what he had done.
Cross examined: He had the tenancy under a written agreement. He had not adopted them proceedings on any one’s instigation. No one had prompted him to take the proceedings. He had to give or to receive a quarters notice to leave the premises. He could not say who was his landlord. It was his wife who had made the agreement with his sanction. Did not know that Mr George Hodge was the landlord. Was not aware that Mr Hodge had made an agreement to the affect that the purchaser should have possession of the hereditaments agreed to be sold on the signing of the contract. It was after the 22nd of December, the date of the contract, that the defendant came to his house. Defendant: came to see him prior to the 17th of January, but did not tell him he had made any agreement. He said he had bought the place, but did not say that it would be used as a British Workman. On the 17th of January, when the defendant came the back door was not fast but the front door was. The defendant came into the passage and took hold of the door whilst the others took it off. No personal violence was offered towards him. Some of the men came into the home and he ordered them out, but they would not go. Two men, Harrison and Longman, fetched the ladder and took the tiles off.- The complainant’s wife and two other witnesses were called, one of whom stated that she tried three times to prevent defendant entering the house.-Mr Hearfield then submitted that there was no force used by the defendant getting into the complainants house, and no violence was sued against anyone in the house. Therefore it was not a situation that would come within the statute. He quoted a decision in which it stated that the prosecutor must prove a forcible entrance, an entry with a strong hand, and a multitude of people. In this instance there was no entry with a strong hand although there was a number of people. An entry by means of an open door, without further violence- by which he assumed it meant violence to the people in the house- did not come within the meaning of the statute- In reply Mr. Summers stated that the very fact of the last witness trying to push the defendant three times showed that a certain amount of force had been used. His worship thought that the complainant could not have done more than he actually did. They exercised a large amount of discretion considering that there was a large crowd outside. He thought from the evidence off the last witness and from the tiles being taken from the roof that a show of violence had been made and that the entry decidedly came within the statute. So far as the point of the law was concerned, he was against Mr. Hearfield. The case was adjourned to this day (Saturday) His worship insisted in the course of the hearing that he should not adjudicate upon the case, but should send it to the sessions.

Richard Stephenson surrendered to take his trial upon an indictment charging him with circulars to the value of 3ds from Messrs. Doherty and Co, Oxford Street, by false pretences.
Mr. Poland, Mr. Montagu Williams and Mr. Mead prosecuted for the Treasury; Mr. Warner Sleigh and Mr. Woodgate defended.
In opening the case for the prosecution it was stated that the defendant ordered a quantity of circulars from Messrs. Doherty and Co, like hose which had been supplied before. He had then one of Messrs. Brown, Gould and Co in his hand. The defendant, it was stated, had taken over the advertising business formerly carried by a man known as Montgomery, who manager he had been.
Two witnesses were examined and it was elicited that, although Messrs. Doherty and Co were nominal prosecutors, they being the parties supplying the circulars, they had given Messrs. Brown, Gould and Co, who were the real prosecutors, authority to use their name.
The Recorder, upon hearing these and other facts, stopped the case and directed the jury to acquit the prisoner.
This having been done,
The Recorder, addressing the defendant, said he left the court without a stain on his character.
Mr. Wilson M.P. for Hull, and a number of witnesses from that town were present to speak to the defendants character.

1886 July Thomas Root’s states in a report in later years that Robert D’Onston Stephenson applied for the position of Secretaryship of the Metropolitan and city Police Orphanage. His application was rejected and he never had the chance of earning ₤250 a year. Charles Warren sat on the interview panel for this job role.
1887 May 11th a female was found Ripped into six pieces floating in the River Thames. Many have suggested that this is Anne Deary, Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s wife but she wasn’t dead.

Union Mill

First up is an 1854 map showing the location of the Union Mill, not the Tallow mill to the side of the mill, this will provide a point of reference later in the thread. Note that the mill is slightly set back from the bankside, providing a landind/loading wharf, complete with crane. In front of the mill we see what can only be described as gardens!!

The next map is from 1889 and shows slight alterations to the mill. Again the Tallow mill is next to the Union mill.
