  • The Prince at the ball...

    Hello all,

Here's an interesting little find for the watchers of Prince Albert Victor from the Putney and Wandsworth Borough News, dated 5th January 1889.

In the column entitled The Society Papers (from Truth), comes this little story...

"I understand the Queen was exceedingly angry at hearing that Prince Albert Victor had attended a ball during the first stage of the Court mourning for Prince Alexander of Hesse. Her Majesty's indignation was increased on learning that the Canford Manor party paid no attention to the edict, but all appeared in colours, Lady Wimbourne setting the example of her guests by wearing a dress of apricot brocade, with her famous rubies. It was a flagrant violation of ettiquette by Royal personage, to be seen at a ball under such circumstances, and the blunder was aggravated by the almost universal wearing of colours. Lady Malmesbury was one of the very few guests who came in mourning."

Hmmm, "We are not amused" indeed!

    best wishes
