  • Location of Michael Maybrick for the Kelly Murder

Apologies if this has been posted before, I tried a search for Michael Maybrick and all I got was Michael Barret posts.

The following article is from the Surrey Mirror - Saturday 03 November 1888 Edition.

Looks like Michael was in Redhill on the evening of Thursday 8th November. Could James have been in attendance? Could either of them have made their way to Dorset St after the concert in time to murder MJK?

It's probably not impossible, but I don't see any reason to suspect them. Anyone who was in Greater London that night COULD have gone to Dorset Street.

But you have to ask yourself, Why did Mary sing for “an hour”?
A Northern Italian invented Criminology but Thomas Harris surpassed us all.

Agreed. I just thought it was interesting being able to place a Maybrick in London on the night Mary was killed.

          Hi Tab,

Thanks for bringing this up. Michael Maybrick lived in London in the 1880s (7 Wellington Mansion, North Bank, near Regent's Park) so he was actually about 25 or 30 miles further afield than normal that night.

David Barrat mentioned this concert in his review of Bruce Robinson's book on his website (link below) and added this interesting detail: "The Reigate, Redhill, Dorking and Epsom Journal of 13 November 1888 says that the concert terminated at 10.15pm with the playing of the National Anthem."

Michael could have skipped out of the concert early, but that might have been poor form. Had he stayed the duration, the next and final northbound train left Redhill at 11:32 p.m., arriving at London Bridge at 12:15 a.m., but, according to Mrs. Cox's deposition at the inquest, Mary was already singing at a quarter to twelve, so if we want a musical murder we might have a problem.

David Barrat quotes the same paper as having Maybrick singing "I am a Roamer" in the second half of the program. If he immediately bailed on finishing the song, could he have made the earlier train leaving Redhill Junction at 9:50 p.m.?

I have no idea, and since I don't consider him a suspect, I don't particularly care.

Robinson (who apparently didn't know about the concert and doesn't mention it) opted for Kelly dying sometime the next morning, after Mrs. Maxwell saw her, so it doesn't particularly hurt his theory unless someone finds evidence that Maybrick stayed with some local dignitaries that night and enjoyed a late champagne breakfast.

          Cheers.
