In June 1992 Keith Skinner was commissioned by Robert Smith to act as a consultant on Shirley Harrison's The Diary of Jack The Ripper and was given a typescript/transcript of the Maybrick Diary, understood to have been printed off from Michael Barrett's word processor. Skinner suggested to Smith that Paul Begg and Martin Fido be brought on board, at no additional expense, so as to have the benefit of their superior knowledge and expertise around the Ripper case, leaving Skinner free to help Harrison with research into the Maybrick Case. All three were bound by a non disclosure agreement as it was vital the purported identity of James Maybrick should be kept secret until the book was published in the Autumn of 1993. Skinner sent Fido a copy of the transcript on June 17th 1992 and Begg a copy of the transcript on August 13th 1992. Skinner says he knows of no other transcripts which were sent out and it is therefore possible Paul Begg might still have his copy - or the family of the late Martin Fido might retain his amongst his papers.
The images that follow is that document and we are calling this the KS version.
Please note this is Skinner's "working document"and contains his markings, annotations thoughts and highlighting, many of them made over 30 years ago. They also include the original annotations which were on the transcript when it was received by Skinner. In granting us permission to publish the typescript, Keith Skinner states that he is not prepared to engage in any discussion about his reflections. or questions about the markups- what they say, mean, or his thinking at the time they were made.
Thank you to Keith Skinner for making this available to Casebook.
