Apologies if this is well known but I have come across a reference to a letter written to Joseph Bell from Arthur Conan Doyle dated 1892. In it, Doyle warns Bell that his new found fame as the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes might cause him to receive crank mail. Doyle refers to a few of his own correspondents including, "... a Liverpool merchant who burns to know who Jack the Ripper is".
Coincidence no doubt but I thought this might tickle die-hard Maybrickers.
Best wishes,
Steve.
