Micheal Barrett, the one who called Doreen Montgomery, said he forged the "diary" two times, changing his story each time. He owned a typewriter with the whole "diarys" manuscript, and ordered a small red victorian diary with forgery in mind, but stated that it was not large enough.

Was a witness to Tony Devereux's Will and his handwriting was very similar to that of the "diary".

I don't 'know' that at all. I don't 'know' that Mike ordered the tiny red 1891 diary 'with forgery in mind'. In fact I'm as certain as I will ever be that he ordered it to see what a genuine Victorian diary might actually look like.

Also, I don't 'know' that Tony Devereux wasn't dragged in by Mike after his death to provide a convenient - if hard to believe - account of how he could have become the diary's legitimate owner.

If you can't prove that Devereux was ever involved (and you can't), there's no link between Gerard Kane and Mike. Mike certainly never mentioned Kane in any of his unsupported confession statements, and there's no evidence that they knew of each other's existence.

And if you think the diary handwriting is 'very similar' to Kane's (and haven't simply swallowed another theorist's amateur opinion), may I suggest you should have gone to Specsavers.

But Corey, the 'facts' in your post that I disputed are NOT stated as facts by the authors. That is terribly misleading of you. We simply quote what other people have claimed at various times. Anything Mike Barrett has ever claimed to know, for instance, about the diary's creation has proved to be wholly unreliable, and ranges from laugh-out-loud illogical to physically impossible. The golden rule for investigating the genesis of this document is to set to one side everything that Mike has ever 'confessed' to (because you will find no independent support for any of it and plenty of evidence that he makes stuff up as he thinks of it) and start again without him.

And what do you mean by 'the most logical' confession? As far as I'm aware, Mike's the only person who has made any sort of confession in the 18 years since the diary emerged, and he could only come up with an assortment of highly dubious, contradictory or provably false claims about who was involved. And he only started doing this when the Barrett marriage was in tatters and he had got it into his drink-befuddled head that Feldman was hellbent on turning their young daughter into a direct descendant of Jack the Ripper.

The only way Mike thought he could stop Feldy in his tracks was by announcing to the world that he faked the thing himself. He came out with any old guff he thought people would latch onto, and it worked like a charm on those who wanted to believe it, just like Feldy's more outrageous theories were still swallowed by others - the great divide between similarly unenquiring minds, all shut to the millions upon millions of potential diary fakers lurking between two equally unlikely extremes: Maybrick in 1889 and Mike in 1989.

I have Caz and Co's book and also enjoyed it. Amazon.co.uk is a good place to find books of all kinds.

At the moment I think that the Diary could well have been written by someone who had to leave blank spaces in it to be filled in later on. For instance, look at the facsimile of the first page of the 'Diary', second paragraph, third line. Don't you think that the words 'Post House' look as if they were added later? Also, third paragraph, second line, the word 'Gladys'? Also, page 10, second paragraph, first line. It looks to me as if 'Middlesex Street' was added later and that there was not enough room to put in 'Street' (the comma seems to be underneath the second 'e'). On the last page, first paragraph, fifth line - 'George' looks as if it could have been added later. (I've got Shirley Harrison's book 'The American Connection' open beside me).

I also think it possible that the scrap album itself contained a number of newspaper cuttings relating to the Maybrick poison case, collected by the children's nurse (if we are to believe Billy Graham's account of the album being left to him by his step-grandmother). These helped the 'author' of the Diary with his invention. These pages being cut out before the actual writing in the album.

I'm sorry you've had to wait for your sherry but the problem is I can't find it. I can find the bottle but not the sherry. Between you and me Cook has been helping herself to it for medicinal purposes (so she says).

Fake or no, Barrett & Harrison's book is a good read. I'm about 60% through, and throughly enjoying it. In fact, I've also ordered "Edged in Arsenic", which will be my follow-up to this.

Yep, got to agree with you there, all the JM related books are great reads, whats most interesting is no one can explain them away.
