But I never said Anne 'wouldn't possibly have dared' come out with her story in July 1994 if she knew Mike could prove they had forged the diary together. I observed that it would have been extremely foolish at that point in time, given that he had just claimed, the month previously, that it was a forgery, and given that she knew he was already spitting blood about the fact that she had left him and taken their only child with her, and now she was co-operating with Feldman and his obsession with proving a family connection back to the Maybricks - which both Barretts would have known to be complete rubbish. If anything was designed to make Mike even more determined to prove his forgery claim, that was it.
Obviously Mike could then have changed tack again completely, reducing his credibility further, with a third different claim, that the diary had, after all, come from Battlecrease, whether there was any more evidence for that than there was for the forgery claim. But how likely did Anne think that would be, considering Mike's vehement denials and his desperate need, more than ever, to remain centre stage where the diary was concerned? And why would she imagine the person who had taken the diary would object to her story, much less want to challenge it, with evidence of his own criminal activity, in stealing from a house he had worked in? Feldman was not going back down that route on Mike's say-so, and Mike himself would surely have hated to concede that Feldman's original suspicions had been spot on. At least his forgery claims kept him in the diary spotlight and he could say he had conned all his enemies. Had he admitted he was nothing more than the receiver of stolen property, and tried to drop one of the electricians in it, how would that have hurt the people who, in his mind, had done him the most wrong?
No, by July 1994, Anne had less to fear from an electrician, if he pinched the diary one morning in March 1992, than she had to fear from Mike if they had spent time forging it together.
Love,
Caz
