Hyman Sampson was a Polish immigrant who migrated to Whitechapel in the late 1860s and is listed in the 1871 census as living with his wife at 58 Goulston Street. He is listed as a Master Kosher Butcher who had his shop there for 19 years before being moved due to demolition for the Wentworth Street Dwellings. The same location where Eddowes Apron and graffiti would be found on September 30, 1888.
The Whitechapel District Board of Public Works was responsible for moving the Goulston and Wentworth Street tennants displaced by the demolition. There were 58 members on this Board comprised of business owners and landlords, as well as Christians and Jews, including immigrant Jews.
The demolition started in 1885 and the Dwellings were finished in 1887. New tennants included the mother and sister of Jacob Levy as well as his older brother Isaac and his rather large family
There were at least 4 kosher butchers in and around Middlesex Street including Jacob Levy at #36 Middlesex Street and witness to Eddowes, Joseph Hyam Levy was at #1 Hutchinson Street on the corner of Middlesex Street about 60 yards south of #36.
It was first cousin Joseph Hyams mother Francis that gave #36 to Jacob. This was a family legacy property dating back to the early 1700's. It was also a Prime location for the Sunday Petticoat Lane Market. This occured in early 1884.
So one has to ask, what in the hell were the Board of Public Works thinking when they put Hyman Sampson , an older more savvy Master Butcher at #35 Middlesex Street. Literally next door to Jacob Levy. An immigrant right next to a Legacy anglicized Jew?
The story is captured in Old Bailey records and by 1886 the tension between Sampson and Levy had boiled to a breaking point. Sampson in court records shows his arrogance " i sell more expensive meats and we buy from the same killers" and " I wouldn't not convict Levy for 10,000 pounds". Sounds like animosity to me. Levy got 12 months hard labor for supposedly stealing an inferior piece of meat. Eventhough he said it was a lark.
What gets missed with Levy is not this specific episode and consequence but what led to it. The bigger Picture was the disrespect shown to the Levy's by the Board of Public Works and their decision to put an immigrant Butcher next to a Legacy Englishman, albeit a Jew but Englishman none the less. This would also give Joseph Hyam Levy little incentive to help Authority if he in fact saw his cousin Jacob with Eddowes
Sampson saw this as a way to get rid of competition as it left the Levy business to his wife with 4 small children . He was callous and unsympathetic. Sampson dies in 1887 roughly 2 months after Jacob is released from Essex Asylum, a convicted criminal lunatic exposed within a Victorian Asylum for 11 months. He would forever be stigmatized and perhaps feeling cheated out of his revenge.
WHy did JtR leave the bloody Apron at 58 Goulston Street along with a message blaming Jews for committing a crime that " meant something " versus nothing?
Could it be that the Immigration of Jews indirectly resulted in an Englishman indeed being the Ripper. Jacob Levy was not a Slavic Jew. The picture circulated now regarding Aaron Kosminski and the DNA is not a Slavic Jew. It actually looks like a Sephardic Jew with features resembling more Spanish or Portuguese ancestry.
