  • Was Jack the Ripper a Kosher Butcher

I am new to the Forum but hope to raise some questions and get answers regarding method used by the Killer. Whoever murdered these women knew his way around a knife. He also kept his blade sharp as referenced in post mortem statement and knew how to bleed out the victim. Turning the heads to sever the carotid shows some level of methodology. A Kosher Butcher is a highly trained Butcher and in 1888 the severing of an animals carotid was a standard procedure. Knife sharpening to.perform the Critical neck cut was a standard second nature kosher butcher procedure. The abdominal cuts also point to a method of down and up, again to post mortem statement. You can see this method today on youtube.
Do the bodies tell the story regarding this killer? Was Tabrum a probe?
it's not just the bodies that point to a Butchers method, transferred from a lifetime of training on animals. Jacob Levy as a suspect would not only be able to achieve these mutilations, but living on the London side of Middlesex Street gave him the perfect hideout until Catherine Eddowes.
Considering Levys location at 36 Middlesex St and location of the kill sites, Levy could Butcher in less than 5 minutes and be home in 15. An indication of why he was not caught?
Do the postmortem descriptions reveal the truth, the method and a narrowed field of suspects?

First, welcome to the boards, Patrick!

Sure, it is worthy to explore even if it is old news. I think Levy is a good suspect, but I would caution you that even if the Ripper was a butcher that doesn't mean it was Levy. Lots of people walking around the East End had this skill set. While less common today, I happen to be staying in a farming village at the moment and everyone in the household besides me has slaughtered an animal. So, the knowledge needed is hardly specialized.

Now, maybe you are referring to a particular kosher technique (unlike a Gentile butchering technique) that is relevant to the murders? If so, that would be interesting and I would like to know more.

Thank you for the welcome. I was looking at the Shechita method Kosher Butchers used, the cutting of the neck and sharpness of the blade was the critical first step of that procedure. It was also a very delicate procedure that was designed to minimize pain to the animal so it did not cry out. None of the victims were known to cry out. The closest Butcher living to all the victims was Levy. And only 4 blocks away. The bleeding out of the neck deliberately i would argue is a repeatable technique. Someone who knew how. I don't believe it was a common skill set outside the butcher trade.
