How about looking at the evidence of Sarah Lewis at the Kelly inquest.

From the Daily Telegraph: "I live at 24, Great Pearl-street".

From the official record (deposition): "I live at 24 Great Powell Street".

Which one do you think is correct?

Great Pearls St actually existed as per the 1891 Census for Spitalfields. As far as I can tell there was no Great Powell St, Spitalfields.

          Hi All,

There was no Great Powell Street in London in 1888, so Great Pearl Street it is. As opposed, say, to Little Pearl Street, which did exist.

Powell and Pearl. Easily misunderstood if the transcriber of Sarah Lewis's witness deposition was a bit mutton jeff, or perhaps her diction was not all that it might be.

          Regards,

          Simon

            Just a quick quibble :

Premise A: All fish have gills and fins.

Premise B: A marlin has gills and fins.

Conclusion: The marlin is a fish.

Premise A: All serial killers kill more than one victim.

Premise B: Jack the Ripper killed more than one victim.

Conclusion: Jack the Ripper was a serial killer.

I don't think either of the above is a valid inference.

Thanks to Biliou and Simon for the replies but the question was really designed with Pierre in mind to see if he could admit to, and cope with, a newspaper being more accurate than the official record.

Yes, I realised that but replied to push the discussion along. Other people are reading as well!
