The listing in 1901 was just two months after Bessie Chapman had died.
Chapman himself is listed as American born and also lists himself as single, not a widower

135 Union Street, Southwark (Monument P.H.)
Head: George Chapman aged 35 born United States - Publican
Servant:
Henry F Hope aged 18 born Cheshire - Potman/Barman

Thanks Chris. What a ghastly character he was! He had been going cycling with Bessie every week not long before he decided to kill her! He was a very keen cyclist apparently and actually joined the local Police Cycling club!
But to see him here,large as life so to speak, after subjecting poor Bessie to months of torture......it beggars belief.

There is another mistake, Chris: he didn't get the enumerator to fill in the rightmost column - "lunatic".
