  • A question about Dr Barnardo

First, let me start with the fact I do not consider him a suspect, and the point of this thread is not about his potential guilt or not.

I want to know if Barnardo could have been considered a suspect during his lifetime, either by the police, the press or the general population.

This is for fiction purpose. As far as I know, he never was a suspect before some theories surfaced in 1970.

But I want to know if some "unfair" treatment of this philanthropist could have hurt him on a personal level.

I read that he was sent to jail at one point on an unrelated matter of contempt of the court (couldn't produce a witness under his care)

Thank you. Hope you had a lovely summer.

I can;t see why he would have been considered a suspect at the time. He was a well-respected philanthropist.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

Dr Barnardo was first advanced as a suspect in the 1962 edition of The Identity of Jack the Ripper, but the book did not say when or by whom he had been accused. Dame Gillian Wagner, giving as her source 'private information' wrote in her biography of Barnardo: ‘it is hardly surprising that Barnardo’s name should have been included among [the suspects]. He was known to frequent the streets and courts where the murders had taken place, and was well known to both the police and in the common lodging-houses’ (Barnardo. London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1979). It was reported (East London Advertiser, 13 October 1888) that Dr Barnardo visited 32 Flower and Dean Street. There, he discussed the murders with women who included Elizabeth Stride. Barnardo also wrote letters (see The Times, 9 October 1888) and conducted meetings at which reference was made to the attention the murders had drawn to the condition of children and common lodging-houses.

See The Jack the Ripper A to Z for more details.

            thanks for that, people.

Was his "hatred" of prostitutes a speculation?

if not, people on the street might have suspected him, no?

Stride was at 32 Flower and Dean Street from 26 to 30 September during the Autumn of Terror.
              That's four days,inclusive.

              Barnado remembers Stride mid October.

May I submit Sanity Claus as a Ripper suspect.....in cahoots with the Easter Bunny of course.

              People will believe anything

And I can sell them a bridge in Sydney that people pay to drive over.

Well if they are that gullible they'll buy anything.

He was taken to court 88 times for kidnapping and falsifying records.

GUT has a bridge he wishes to sell you.

Think GUT runs regular ads in Gumtree since he was banned from eBay.

                        Oh!

                        Sorry.

There are plenty of blue links at the bottom.

That's bottom of the Wikipedia page....nothing to do with "bottom of the harbor schemes" which might be another of GUT's sidelines
