Timothy Donavan at the Old Bailey

Hi everyone,
I had a brief look around the boards and did not see any reference to Donovan's appearence at The Old Bailey for killing his wife. I seem to remember speculation that this might be the same Timothy Donovan who appeared at Annie Chapman's inquest. Here is the link: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/brows...-334#highlight

Hi Chris,

This Timothy Donovan (with wife Mary) may be found in the 1891 census living in Sutton Street, St George's East - his occupation given as "Dock Labourer". Sutton Street is just around the corner from Lucas Street, St George's East, where he and Mary were living at the time of the 1901 census and (as reported in the Old Bailey records) where Donovan was living at the time of his trial.

Interestingly, this Timothy Donovan seems to be the same as the one found by Rob Linford many moons ago, who lived with his parents at 49 Splidts Street, St George's East, in 1881.

All in all, it appears that this chap hovered around St George's East for three decades, and worked at the docks. Faced with all this, I don't think that he was the same Timothy Donovan, lodging-house attendant, of Ripper lore.

Hi Sam,
Thanks for the reply I agree it looks unlikely but I feel that Donovan only works as a suspect if he is this Tim Donovan. Due to the other candidate dying before MJK. My own views on suspect based Ripperology is that we should look at similar fact suspects (Bury, Kelly, Grainger) and see if they can be linked to the Ripper crimes. Also to look at suspects such as Benelius who were arrested twice for the Ripper murders.

Timothy Donovan

If Crossingham's Donovan was 29 in 1888,then he possibly did die in November 1888 age 29 death reg Whitechapel
He would have been 22 in 1881 so I think this is Crossingham's Donovan
in 1881 census.
Timothy Donovan 22 born Whitechapel Labourer.
Catherine Donovan 50 born Ireland sackmaker

The wife murderer Donovan could be the Timothy Donovan who died 1st sept 1915
