  • Good morning all from Atlanta GA USA!

I am by no means an expert on Jack the Ripper although I do keep up with alot of the threads/discussions in here on an almost daily basis. I just wanted to list the possible suspects who I think may have killed the C5:

James Kelly-Nichols, Chapman, Eddowes(per Jack the Ripper in America Documentary)

Kosminski-Stride(since Schwartz witnessed him with her just before her death)

????-Kelly(I am tempted to put Kelly here as the suspect although something about the murder tells me it was probably someone else)

I am sure there is plenty of evidence to disuade the above possibilities, but I wanted your opinions on these. Have a great day/night all

Hi David! welcome to the forums.

Kosminski-Stride(since Schwartz witnessed him with her just before her death)

    Where did this spring from?

I know of no identification by Schwartz of anyone. Do you mean Lawende, allegedly seeing Eddowes with a man?

The two man schwatrz saw are usally referred to as Broad Shouldered Man and Pipe-smoking Man. I did not know he gave them names.

Grateful if you could expand on your view.

Hope you enjoy your time here as much as i do.

    Phil

My mistake. I could have sworn it was Schwartz who identified Kosminsky at the scene arguing with Stride shortly before her death but refused to testify against him because he didn't want to send a fellow Jew to the gallows. Am I getting this confused with another person?

        I think you have conflated:

        1) Schwartz' testimony - involving BSM and PSM;

        2) Anderson's memoirs and Swanson's marginalia which mention a Polish Jew (Anderson) and a name - Kosminski -(Swanson) plus an ID and a refusal to testify.

        3) The Macnaghten memorandum (on the official file) also mentions Kosminski as one of three possible suepcts more likely than a fourth to have been JtR.

The ID and the role of Kosminski remains (shall we say) contentious - there is a L-O-N-G current thread on his "plausibility".

The likelihood is - at least in my opinion - that Andersons Jew, Swanson's Kosminski and Macnaghten's Kosminski are the same man, and he was a SUSPECT - no more.

Martin Fido in the mid-80s, identified Aron Kosminski as an inmate of a mental institution - but he lived until 1919 (from memory) whereas the man mentioned by Swanson supposedly died in the early 1890s (apologies for vagueness, I don't have my sources here).

This means that we cannot be sure of the identity of Kosminski or whether there was confusion between two (or more) men. There has been a very good recent book on Kosminski which is NOT a suspect-based book but simply and examination of this man.

I am aware of NO evidence or testimony linking Kosminski by name or presence to Berners St and Stride's death.

There were two usually regarding sightings of a man thought to be "jack" - one outside 29 Hanvury St at around 5.15 on the day of the murder by Mrs Long; and Lawende's sighting (with 2 other men) of a man with a woman thought to be Eddowes on the fringes of Mitre Square, minutes before the murder.

Happy to try to answer more questions on all this, but try the dissertations section of Casebook for authoritative advice.

        Cheers,

        Phil

Hi David, don't worry, I have been following this case for years and I still get all of it mixed up!

I am in NC, not so very far north, having good weather there?

I think the arguement is that Schwartz was Anderson's only plausible witness. Schwartz then fingers Kosminski for the Stride murder only.

This leaves Barnett, Hutchinson or whichever name you prefer to kill the other victims.

You're not foolish, this is a very complicated case and there are a LOT of players in it. In fact, there's players in it that didn't even have anything to do with it! There are at least five victims involved, not just one. I have to keep my JTR A-Z and other books in the case closest to my computer.

Some of the most brilliant minds are on this case and somehow they keep all the facts straight. Then there's us.....
