  • William Brodie

It was reported in an overseas newspaper on July 23,1889,that a person named William Brodie has been arrested on suspicion as the Whitechapel murderer, and remanded for a week.
Anyone have information on this person?

    Hi Harry

Brodie was arrested after the murder of McKenzie, but I know very little about him. He's certainly in different press reports, I think.

There are a few lines about him in Evans and Rumbelow "Scotland Yard Investigates", p 209:

"The police arrested a drunken criminal named William Wallace Brodie who gave himself up as the murderer at Leman St police station on 19 July 1889. Brodie was eventually cleared of all suspicion with regard to the murders but was rearrested on a warrant for fraud."

    Amitiés, best wishes,
    David
