  • The drover

    Hi,
On theory that was considered by the police at that time was the possibility that the killer may have been a Drover, and was away from the area for long periods and appeared only at dates that he was able,
If one takes Mrs Hewitts press statement and her mentioning of a man with the surname Lawrence a Drover, and the fact that she believed that this man who often called on kelly was her husband, we have someone in kellys life who had a occupation that could be that of the 'Ripper' and yet another suspect along with Barnett and fleming .
The man calling himself Lawrence looks sure to have existed the summons story seems unlikely to have been invented on the spur of the moment , Mrs Hewitt who lived next door to the court also related that kelly used to go and stay with this man on occassions but always returned back to her room when she tired of the life[ something mjk seemed to have a habit of doing]
Another plausible suspect and never discussed till now.
    Regards Richard.

Although not a Drover, Trevor Marriott, in his book "JTR The 21st Century Investigation" looked at the possibilty of it being a Merchant Seaman, and named Carl Feigenbaum as his suspect.

It is true that the East London Docks were only a short distance away.
    Regards Mike

      Richard,

If you are still curious about Mrs Hewitt's drover, you might find this interesting:

In August, 1906, the Manor House and farm of Little Bromfords in Essex was advertised for sale. The description of the property in the sales catalogue ran: 'Little Bromfords, Wickford, Nevendon and Ramsden Bellhouse, a freehold dairy farm, comprising manor house with garden and orchard, farm premises, cottage with garden, and
