Hi folks.
Whilst compiling the Sadler article for Wiki, I checked out biographical information, much of which was given in a statement made by his estranged wife.
Working backwards from various census sources, I discovered that Sadler's past is different from what I have seen before. Not wishing to disparage the efforts of notable others, I noted that Sadler was actually born in Stepney in c.1838 and that his wife's name was Sarah Maria Chapman. They had three daughters, the first of whom was born in Chatham, where Sadler and Sarah met and married and where Sarah later went to live before being briefly reconciled with James.
I also found out that Sadler was probably brought up by his mother, who was widowed before Sadler was 3 years old. It's just them two on the 1841 and 1851 census returns.
The JTR Sourcebook also documents further violent acts against his wife in 1892.
